ERC-SyG awarded to study brain folding

26 October 2023 - Our lab was just awarded an ERC Synergy Grant!!! With the UNFOLD project we are going to study the causes and consequences of cerebral cortex folding, from a perspective across the scientific fields of biology, physics and computational modeling. UNFOLD will be coordinated by our lab and developed together with the labs of Kristian Franze (FAU Erlangen, Germany), Laurent Nguyen (Univ. Liege, Belgium) and Roberto Toro (Pasteur Institute, France).

We are hiring postdocs!!! - see job offer link

New study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

6 September 2022 - We are happy for the publication of a collaborative study with the laboratory of Eduardo Soriano (University of Barcelona), demonstrating that Reelin originated from Cajal-Retzius cells and from GABAergic interneurons has partially overlapping but also distinct functions in the lamination of the cerebral cortex.

New review paper published in Developmental Neurobiology

24 June 2022 - The latest review paper from our lab was just published online in Developmental Neurobiology, a joint effort with Alex, Eduardo and Enrico, PhD students in the lab, where we discuss the current understanding of the genetic mechanisms that regulated cortical neurogenesis during evolution.

New study published in Cell Reports

15 February 2022 - We are proud to see published the main part of Ugo's PhD work, in collaboration between our lab and the labs of Alex Dayer and Denis Jabaudon, where we demonstrate th e cell type-specific role of two miRNAs, miR-137 and miR-22 in basal progenitor amplification and neuron migration, respectively, both key in cerebral cortex expansion during evolution.

Tomasello U, Klingler E, Niquille M, Mule N, Santinha AJ, de Vevey L, Prados J, Platt RJ, Borrell V, Jabaudon D, Dayer A (2022) MiR-137 and miR-122, two outer subventricular zone-enriched non-coding RNAs, regulate basal progenitor expansion and neuronal differentiation. Cell Reports 38, 110381

New study published in Science Advances

15 January 2022 - We are proud to see published the main part of Kaviya's PhD work in our lab, where we demonstrate the key role of MIR3607 in the evolutionary expansion of the mammalian cerebral cortex, and its secondary loss in the rodent lineage reducing cortex size and folding.

AECC Research Grant awarded to Borrell Lab

The Fundación Científica Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer has awarded one of its prestigious Research Grants to our lab to study ETMR (Embryonal Tumor with Multilayered Rosettes). ETMR is a rare type of pediatric tumor of embryonic onset, very poor prognosis, and extremely short survival after diagnosis, caused by defects in microRNA function. With this grant, our lab will investigate the cellular and genetic mechanisms underlying ETMR onset, and search for potential therapeutic strategies.
